The main motivation for my work is to raise awareness of the omnipresence of waste. My work revolves around the ordinariness and the omnipresence of waste – two aspects I’ve tried to combine by mainly focusing on plastic waste. Since the middle of the 20th century plastic has been an indispensable part of our lives. Roland Barthes considers plastic a spectacle that can take any desired shape. He refers to it as a magic substance amenable to ordinariness. Being the driving force behind consumerism, plastic remains an expression of possibilities, a symbol of our affluent and throw-away society as well as a health risk.
